How many times have you told yourself “I’m going to wake up early and get my fitness in before work!”

If you said zero times, I’m going to have to ask you to leave your IG handle in the comments so I can DM you and call bullshit.

Spring has sprung and the morning sun rises earlier and earlier each day. So, here are 3 tips to help you take action and start becoming the person you seek to be.

Prep the night before

While we all think the ability to wake up and get out the door begins when that fateful alarm goes off at 5 AM, I’m afraid to say that this is probably the reason why you have failed so far.

You need to prep yourself to be able to wake up and have a SUCCESSFUL morning routine with no hitches to make it out the door as the sun rises.

  • Put clean workout clothes beside your bed

  • Have a clean water bottle ready on kitchen table

  • Stock your fridge with any breakfast needs

  • Prep any coffee desires

ANY EXCUSE you leave yourself with, you will apply and allow yourself to fail as soon as you begin.

Get sleep

I have heard the gambit of excuses for not being able to sleep early, but sleep is essential for MANY reasons. So, let’s keep it simple and follow these steps for 10 full days and then tell me you can’t fall asleep before midnight.

  • Don’t eat after 7pm

  • Don’t watch TV or look at your phone for a full 30 minutes before you turn your lights off

  • Pick up a book and read in the 30 minute time window

  • Drink a non-caffeinated tea while reading

  • Write down any and all thoughts in your head … anything from “Eff this shit” to a full 10,000 word essay on why the world is actually flat

Find your morning of least resistance

This is something I can’t tell you how to do. You need to sit down for a minute and think outside of the box for what your most productive mornings rely on.

For myself, I NEED to shower and have my bulletproof coffee. It’s ludicrous because in 60 minutes I will just have to hop in the shower again post-workout. But the hot water defogs my mind of the sleep I was in and sets me on the path I need to have the most successful start of my day and keep the momentum going.

Find the path that is most efficient for you. It may mean 15 minutes from wake up to workout, giving yourself no time to find an excuse or it may mean 60 minutes to declutter your email and play with your dog, Rexy, for 20 minutes before you make that venture outside.

As you can tell by now, starting your morning workout really has nothing to do with the actual action of the workout at all. It’s about finding the right routine for you, beginning with the night before leading up to your post-alarm actions that will make or break you to becoming the individual you really want to become.
